Pope Francis has arrived in Poland at the start of a five-day trip to join the 31st World Youth Day. In the flight from Rome, which touched down just before 4pm local time, the Pope referred to the crisis of violence in Europe as a war, but not a war of religion (see Crux). After landing in Krakow for what will be the eleventh visit by a pope to Poland, Francis made his way to Wawel Castle for a meeting with the Polish premier (see Crux).

The speech contained a firm challenge to the Polish authorities over immigration as well as ecology – both areas where Poland’s right-wing Law and Justice Party has been at odds with Pope Francis (for background, see Politico).
